Ending Hunger: Making SDG 2 work

1 - 3 June 2016 | Kathmandu, Nepal | 150+ attendees from 4 continents

Background

During the last two decades, major achievements have been made to combat hunger and poverty. However, in the world today about 795 million remain undernourished. That means one in nine people do not get enough food to be healthy and lead an active life. Most of them live in Asia – two thirds of the total. Malnutrition is the biggest contributor to child mortality. Worldwide, 3.1 million children die of malnutrition every year. On 1 January 2016, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development officially came into force. The United Nations resolved to end all forms of hunger by 2030.

The battle towards achieving zero hunger must be principally fought in rural areas where almost 80% of the world’s hungry and poor live. There is the need for a strong political will and the role of Civil Society is essential to advocate and campaign for targeted strategies and to monitor progress, as well as to innovate and promote alternatives solutions. Now is the time to concretize the role of Civil Society Organizations vis-à-vis the States and other development partners and to identify avenues for action towards realizing Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG 2): End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture.

In this context, the objective of the conference is: Popularizing the 2030 Agenda, with specific focus on SDG 2 and identifying possible roles of Civil Society and avenues for action.
